The Houston Open is coming once again and I am currently organizing a party to head on over!

Tournament Information:

Registration Deadline: Oct 30 (Or first 160 Registrants)
Fees: $35 for first event $10 for second $5 for third

We can arrange partners if you’re interested. Depending on how many people decide to go we might split a hotel room.

Now that we know when the tournament is. In order to prepare for the tournament I will be holding training sessions. These training sessions are only open to members and you will be required to show up to the majority of the sessions. Essentially what I am looking for is a general commitment.

Judging from the general populous here is what I think most people need to work on.

• Physical Shape (cardio, stamina, strengthening muscles)
• Stamina especially, tournaments are very taxing on stamina.
• Technical skills
• General Strategy

Friday will be a free practice (I recommend playing as many games as you can, the higher level the better)
Saturday’s and Sunday’s practice will start off with building up stamina and getting into shape and end with skills practice. I will be practicing throughout the week as well, if anyone wants to join me just let me know.

Here are the leftover practices before the tournament (not including fridays):

Nov 7

We leave for the tournament November 12 and will coordinate schedules to figure out when we will leave for Houston. Each practice session will last about 2-3 hours, to sign up just contact me (Leon Jang) in some way or fashion. I expect that if you do sign up, you will show up to a minimum of 6 practices.

I will be deciding practice times on Friday upon figuring out how many members we have.

I found out just today that badminton for today will be cancelled. There is a Cheerleading Camp going on until Sunday. Luckily for us Janice will be opening Farr Park for us from 6-9pm.

Sorry for those who had come on Tuesday and had to be turned away. The was a mixup in the communication and we weren’t place on the schedule for badminton.

I have received confirmation that we will have courts on Friday. For all those interested, there will be badminton on:

Tuesday: 7:00 – 9:00 pm
Friday: 5:00 – 8:00 pm

These dates will be open to ALL UREC MEMBERS. Which means whether you are a student or associate member you will be able to play on both days.

In regards to the camp I plan to begin on Tuesday and will be taking members in anytime before then.

I just got official confirmation that we will be able to practice in the gym during the summer.

We get 2 days:
Tuesday: 7:00 – 9:00 pm
Friday: 5:00 – 8:00 pm

2nd thing I wanted to go over. I want to start a badminton training camp over the summer. It will be completely free however, the only requirement will be a commitment. The plan is to get better quickly over the summer. So for the veteran players, conditioning and getting more consistent, and for the beginner players, learning the basics and conditioning. I will be reserving the right to at least one court each practice day for this “camp”.

Tuesdays will be conditioning days, and Fridays will be drill days. Remember in order to participate in the camp, a commitment will be required. In other words, come every time to do it. If you are interested I will be taking names down on Tuesday and Friday.

Hey everyone!

I have some exciting news to share with everyone. The UREC is holding a Badminton Doubles Tournament on April 25.

Any types of teams will be able to compete, whether it be, mixed, mens, or womens doubles! SO GOOD LUCK TO EVERYONE!

The tournament will be pool play followed by bracket play. Which means the top players of each “pool” will play in the winners bracket and the bottom players of each “pool” will play in the loser’s bracket. This means the better players will be pitted against the better players and the same with the more non experienced players.

Registration ends the Thursday, the 22nd! Registration fee will be $20, meaning $10 per player. This includes 2 shuttles per game that you will play in the tournament. You will register at UREC Guest Services and the registration form is attached to the email.

Sorry for the late update. But we have no practices at the LSU UREC SRC this week (Spring Break 4/5-4/9). Luckily there are a few other options in terms of badminton in Baton Rouge.
